TikTok is is a social media platform where users can scroll down a curated feed of short videos up to one minute in length. The audience primarily consists of younger millennials and Gen-Z.


TikTok trends move much faster than on other social media platforms, and the ability to go viral is more attainable. Often times, popular TikTok videos will circulate on other social media platforms, such as Instagram and Facebook.


So how do you create and maintain a successful company TikTok account? Be personable. TikTok viewers use the app as a means of connecting with one another through relatable content. In 2020 during the beginning of the pandemic, TikTok skyrocketed in popularity because everyone was forced to stay at home.


Companies, such as the NFL and the Washington Post, have created a large following by being relatable to their audience. Polished, aesthetically pleasing posts belong on Instagram, not TikTok.


Here are some tips to consider when creating a TikTok:


1. Type of Video

Popular videos include short tutorials, staff highlights, and trending topics. The type of industry you're in can determine which videos will be the most successful. Some include:

  • Restocking product ASMR

  • Before and afters (hairstylists, etc)

  • Explanation and How-To's (this works well for companies in the medical or legal field)

2. Length of video

TikTok typically allows users to publish videos up to one minute in length. Recently they rolled out an update that lets specific users upload 3-minute length videos. However, the most popular TikToks tend to be 15-30 seconds in length.


3. Trends

TikTok trends happen very quickly. It is important to be active on the platform to see what is popular. To easily see what's trending, check out the Explore page or the tags #foryoupage #fyp.
